Speakeasy Brewing Company was founded in 1997 in San Francisco, California by Steve Bruce and Forest Gray. In 2017, the company ceased operations after a failed expansion two years prior, and went into court ordered receivership. It was then purchased by Ces Butner, who had previously sold a large Bay Area distributor to Anheuser-Busch InBev. Butner later sold the company to Fresno-based Full-Circle Brewing Company in 2023. That company merged with Crowns & Hops the following year to become Circle of Crowns Brewing Group.
