San Francisco, United States
Anchor Brewing was founded in 1896 by Ernst F. Baruth and his son-in-law Otto Schinkel, Jr., who bought an old brewery in San Francisco, California. Inspired by German tradition, the brewery made lager beers, but without the use of refrigeration or cold cellars to store the beer, resulting in the namesake Steam Beer style. The brewery was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, and rebuilt in the following year. It burned down again in 1944, and by the end of the fifties had severely declined in sales. In 1959, it was shut down. The following year, however, it was purchased and reopened by Lawrence Steese. Steese, however, was unfamiliar with the brewing industry, and developed a reputation for bad year. In 1965, Fritz Maytag (heir to the Maytag appliance fortune) purchased 51% of the brewery, and became the owner outright in 1969. Maytag turned the brewery around, and is considered one of the founding fathers of the American craft beer movement. He owned the brewery until 2010, when it was sold to The Griffin Group, owned by former Skyy executives. In 2017, they in turn sold it to Sapporo, who ran the brewery until 2023, when they announced they were liquidating the brand. An outcry resulted, including from the brewery’s union, who vowed to purchase the brewery from Sapporo. In May of 2024, it was announced that the brewery and all of its assets would be purchased by Hamdi Ulukaya, the billionaire owner behind the Chobani yogurt brand.
