Appalachian Mountain Brewing was created in 2013 in Boone, North Carolina by Nathan Kelischek and Chris Zieber. The two were cousins who shared a love of great beer, and relied on their German heritage to guide their brewing style. In 2014, they entered into a partnership agreement with Craft Brew Alliance to expand production and increase distribution, and four years later CBA bought the company in full.
At the time, CBA was 32.2% owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, but in 2019 AB InBev was forced to pay $20 million instead of purchasing the rest of the company for $24.50 a share as part of their original purchase agreement. This caused the CBA stock to fall, and weeks later AB InBev did end up purchasing the company in full for a much reduced rate, making Appalachian Mountain officially part of their portfolio.
The brand expanded under the corporate rule, including a partnership with fast food chain Bojangles to make hard teas with their brand. However, in May of 2023, Kelischek and Zieber purchased the brand back from AB InBev, and now operate it independently. Soon after the reacquisition, Appalachian Mountain teamed up with Green Man Brewing to produce much of their beer at the Green Man facility.
