Augustiner Bräu is a renowned beer brand that was created in the year 1328, making it one of the oldest breweries in Munich, Germany. The brewery was initially owned by the Augustinian monks, hence the name “Augustiner.” The monastery was set up just outside of the gates of Munich in an area called Haberfield in 1294, and the first mention of brewing there came in 1328. The monks were the official brewers for the Bavarian royal Wittelsbach family until 1589, when the Hofbrauhaus brewery was created.

In 1803, the secularization movement led the government to dissolving the monastery, and the state of Bavaria awarded the Augustiner’s brewing rights to two fisherman, Georg Gröber and Baptist Lankes. They used those rights for nearly three decades, until in 1829, the brewery rights were transfered to husband and wife Anton and Therese Wagner, who had previously run the Hasüberbräu brewery in Freising. They soon industrialized Augustiner with the introduction of a steam engine and the acquisition of a new production facility.

The brewery continued to be family owned throughout much of the 20th century. Under Nazi rule during World War II, most of the brewery was destroyed via aerial bombings. Althou

When Rudolph Wagner died in 1981, he did not have a will, and the brewery passed to a community of heirs. His cousin Edith Haberland-Wagner held 50% of the brewery, while other descendents received the other 50%. Edith eventually purchased 1% more to achieve an outright majority, and when she died she bequeathed her estate to the non-profit Edith-Haberland-Wagner Foundation to keep the brewery from falling into corporate hands. The Inselkammer family holds 30% of the brewery, while the rest of the Wagner owns the remaining portion.
