Baltika Brewery was created in 1990 in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia by Naif Achakzai and Nikita Kefirov. At the time, the country was part of the Soviet Union, which was starting to shift towards a market economy. While the business was state-owned at its outset, in 1992 it was privatized as an open joint stock compoany called Baltic Beverages Holding Brewing Concern. That name was later thcanged to Open Joint Stock Company Baltika Breweries in 1998.

In 2007, Baltika merged with three other breweries in the Russian Federation – Vena, Pikra, and Yarpivo. The following year, the brewery group was purchased by Baltic Beverages Holding. That company, based in Finland, was purchased the year prior by Carlsberg Group.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Carlsberg announced it was selling its Russian assets, including Baltika, in a wave of corporations seeking to divest from the hostile nation. However, in 2023 the Russian government seized the Carlsberg assets, citing rules allowing it to take the property from companies in “unfriendly” countries. The CEO of Carlsberg, Jacob Aarup Andersen, claimed that the nation of Russia had stolen the brand. Russia appointed Taimuraz Bolloyev as the new CEO, who promptly proposed nationalizing the company. The former CEO of the division, Denis Sherstennikov, was later arrested on charges of fraud, alleging that he helped “fraudulently acquired in favor of Carlsberg Kazakhstan nd Vista BiUai Co. the intellectual property right owned by Baltika LLC worth at least 295.6 million rubles.”
