Magna Premium Lager was launched by Cervecera de Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in 2011. Cervecera had been founded in 1937 as Cervecería India, and had taken over much of the Puerto Rican beer market with their India Cerveza. That beer was later followed by Medalla Light, which then overtook India as the company’s flagship product.
Cervecera de Puerto Rico, seeking to add a premium product to their portfolio, began the new product development of Magna in 2008, and invested over one million dollars into its creation. The company’s president, Camalia Valdéz, said in a press release that the beer was designed to compete “head to head with the best ‘premium’ beers in the world.”
At the time, “Premium” beers represented about 18.6% of all beer sales in Puerto Rico, with competitors like Heineken, Corona, and Michelob Ultra taking the lion’s share of the segment. However, Valdéz has indicated that the beer should be differentiated from its competitors, since it was brewed specifically for Puerto Rican drinkers. “Magna Special Craft was designed with world-class quality standards, but always with the Puerto Rican consumer in mind,” he said.
The introduction of the beer also came with the christening of a new $100 million brewing facility at which it was brewed. The beer bottle’s design, which features the head of a lion, was designed by Henry Álvarez with the design firm Revolución, based out of New York. Despite the large market push that came with the introduction of the beer, Medalla Light is still Cervecera de Puerto Rico’s flagship product – it has expanded its distribution in the United States, while Magna’s sales have since declined, both in the continental US as well as on the island.
