Champale malt liquor was first created in 1939 by the Metropolis Brewing Company in Trenton, New Jersey. In the 1970s it was sold to Iroquois Brands Ltd. In 1986, Iroquois divested itself of the brand, and sold Champale to G. Heileman Brewing. They produced the beer until 1996, when they went bankrupt and their assets were picked up by Stroh Brewing. The debt from the purchase caused Stroh to fail, and in 1999 they sold Champale rights to Pabst Brewing. An unrelated brewery in the United Kingdom, Mersea Island Brewery has also used the name, although that beer is no longer in production.
