Covista Cerveza is a brand of beer produced for Aldi Supermarkets beginning in 2021 by Cervecería Centro Americana, based out of Guatemala City, Guatemala. However, in 2023, production was moved into the United States and taken over by “Rock Wall Brewery,” a pseudonym of High Falls Brewing Company, which is the craft beer subsidiary of Genesee Brewing. Since 2012, Genesee has been a subsidiary of Florida Ice and Farm Company, also known as FIFCO, which is headquartered in Costa Rica. Genesee has several of their own brands, but also is a major contract brewer serving much of the northeastern United States, which makes them a logical candidate for partnership with the Aldi grocery store chain.
The Covista brand is a part of Aldi’s strategy of providing low-priced brands available exclusively to their stores, often bearing a striking similarity to name brands that already have significant brand recognition. Covista appears similar to Modelo and Corona, both of which are made by Constellation Brands within the United States. Both of those brands began surging in popularity in the mid 2010’s, after Constellation purchased the rights to the former Grupo Modelo brands in 2012.
The strategy has been criticized by many as trademark infringement, and Aldi has been the subject of at least one lawsuit from a beverage brand for similar marketing. In 2024, the High Court of England and Wales ruled on a case presented by Thatchers Cider, claiming that Aldi’s Taurus Cloudy Lemon Cider was infringing on its product, Thatcher’s Cloudy Lemon Cider. Aldi won the case, with the court ruling that there was a “low degree of similarity” between the two products, and that there was no likelihood of confusion amongst customers.
