Currahee Brewing Company was founded in Franklin, North Carolina in 2016 by Brandon Hintz. In 2020, the company faced backlash after it released a beer called “Boogaloo,” which featured an image of George Washington wearing a Hawaiian shirt in an apparent reference to the racist alt-right “boogaloo” movement. The company claimed they were unaware of the racist connotations of the imagery, and initially claimed that the beer was in support of a pro-second ammendment protest. The company was subsequently removed from the local brewer’s guild, and later claimed that they had donated the proceeds of the beer to civil rights groups.
