Derbes (which means “Independence” in Turkic) was first created by Ak-Nar Brewery in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1999. In 2003, the Carlsberg Group entered the Kazakhstan beer market, first with the purchase of rival Irbis brewery, and then with the purchase of Ak-Nar. In 2006, they changed the name of the merged breweries to Derbes Brewery Ltd, and now have a 45.3% share of the market.
