Erie Brewing Company was founded in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1994 by Mark Armbruster and William Miller. It was originally known as Hoppers Brewpub, before moving to a larger facility and rebranding as Erie in 1999. In 2003, a majority stake in the business was purchased by Cardinal Equity Associates. They held the company until 2012, when it was sold to Rob Lowther.
