Ex Novo Brewery was founded in Portland, Oregon in 2014 by Joel Gregory. Gregory had been a former engineer, and started the brewery after being laid off from his engineering job. In an effor to differentiate the brewery from the many others in the Portland area, and knowing that craft beer drinkers care about the “why” of what they’re drinking, Gregory set the goal of giving 100% of net profits back to the community. By 2023, they had donated over $100,000 to organizations focused on community and social justice.
Early on, the company brought on Ian Greene as a brewmaster. Greene had worked at and previously, and had a degree in brewing and distilling from Edinburgh, Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University.
In 2019, Ex Novo opened a second location in Beaverton, Oregon, and later that year added a third location in Corrales, New Mexico, which they call The Corral. Gregory is from Corrales, and moved back there with his family to be close to his extended family and open the brewery. The company also planned on adding another location in Hillsboro, Oregon, but scrubbed those plans in early 2023. That same year, Gregory announced that he was looking to sell the locations in Oregon to focus on the New Mexico location, as well as a pending Albuquerque location that was announced in September of 2023. A sale is currently pending.
