Franziskaner beer brand was created in the year 1363 by Seidel Vaterstetter in Munich, Germany. The brewery was known for brewing the traditional Bavarian wheat beer, often referred to as “weissbier” or “hefeweizen”. In 1841, Augustin Deiglmayr, who’s father-in-law owned Spaten brewery, purchased Franziskaner, beginning a long period of close ownership of the two breweries. In 1861, Deiglmayr was bought out by his brother-in-law, Joseph Sedlmayr, owner of the Leist Brewery, and merged the two companies. In 1909, Franziskaner-Leist becomes a joint stock company, and in 1922 it finally merges with Spaten to become the Gabriel & Joseph Sedlmayr Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG. In 1997, they again merged with Löwenbräu to form another joint stock company. In 2004, the company was purchased by InBev. In 2008, Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired InBev, forming Anheuser-Busch InBev.
