Genesee Brewing Company was created in 1878 in Rochester, New York by Mathias Kondolf. Kondolf purchased the pre-existing Reisky & Spies Brewery and organized a new company on its site. In 1889, the brewery was purchased by a group of investors, and along with nearby Rochester Brewing Company and Bartholomay Brewery Company, was conglomerated as the Bartholomew Brewing Company.

In 1932, shortly before the end of prohibition, the brand was purchased by Louis Wehle. It grew with the reintroduction of alcohol in the country, and in 1984 acquired the Fred Koch Brewery out of New York state. Genesee Brewing Company was sold to a group of employees in 2000, and the name was changed to High Falls Brewing.

In 2009, the group sold the brewery to KPS Capital Partners, who had recently purchased the rights to Labatt in the United States as part of a deal that Anheuser-Busch made with the US Department of Justice to approve their sale to InBev. KPS reverted the High Falls brewery to the Genesee name, and gave their new subsidiary the name North American Breweries. Three years later, KPS sold NAB to Costa Rican food and beverages company FIFCO (Florida Ice and Food Company) for a total of $338 million. The Genesee Brewery now produces beer for several of FIFCO’s brands, including Seagram’s Escapes.
