Hamm’s Beer was created in 1865 in St. Paul, Minnesota by Theodore Hamm. A German immigrant, Hamm inherited what was formerly the Excelsior Brewery from his friend A.F. Keller after he died in California searching for gold. Hamm had been an early investor in the small brewery, which also acted as a flour mill. He later hired Jacob Schmidt as a brew master, who quit Hamm’s Brewery in the 1880s and later started Schmidt’s Brewery, which is now owned by Pabst. By the time Schmidt left, Hamm’s Brewery was the second biggest in Minnesota.
The company’s success grew even further after prohibition, and by the 1950s Hamm’s was the fifth largest brewery in the entire country. In 1965, however, the brand was sold to Heublin Inc, who held the brand until 1973, when it was sold to a group of Hamm’s distributors. They then sold the brand to Olympia Brewery in 1975. The sale of Olympia to Pabst in 1983 included the Hamm’s brand – however, the brewery in St Paul was sold to Stroh’s Brewery, which operated it until 1997.
In 1999, Miller (then a subsidiary of Philip Morris Companies Inc) purchased the brand from Pabst Brewing. Later in 2002, Miller came under the ownership of South African Breweries (SAB), which then became known as SABMiller. In 2008, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company formed a joint operation in the United States called MillerCoors LLC. When SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016, regulators from the United States Department of Justice believed the deal would cause the company to have too great a market share, so SABMiller’s stake in the joint venture was sold to Molson Coors to satisfy them.
