Humboldt Brewing Company was founded in 1987 in Arcata, California by brothers Vince and Mario Celotto. They quickly became the largest brewery in the county, and demand for their Red Nectar Ale and Hemp Ale (the first of its kind brewed with hemp in the United States). Because of the increase in demand, the company began brewing its beers at Firestone Walker in Paso Robles, and in 2005 Firestone purchased Humboldt Brewing outright, renaming the brand Nectar Ales. Former employees of the company Andy and David Ardell went on to establish HumBrews brewpub, restaurant, and music venue on the spot of the former Humboldt Brewing Company.
In 2013, the brand was again purchased by importer Total Beverage Solution, who changed the name back to Humboldt Brewing Company. In 2020, they sold the brand to the Ardell Brothers, returning it to its original location with local ownership.
