Velkopopovický Kozel was founded in Velké Popovice, Bohemia in 1874 by František Ringhoffer. The brewery was nationalized by the new Czechoslovak government in 1945, and remained government-owned until 1992, when it became a publicly traded company. In 2002, SABMiller purchased the operation. When that company was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016, they were forced to divest of some of its assets, including Kozel, which they sold to Asahi.
