Lapin Kulta was founded in Tornio, Finland in 1873 as Torneå Bryggeri Aktiebolaget. In 1969, the brewery was renamed Lapin Kulta, or “Lapland Gold” after they purchased a local gold mine, which granted them the right to use the name. The company was purchased by fellow Finnish brewery Hartwell. In 1994, Hartwell went public, and in 2002 British company Scottish & Newcastle purchased the organization. This lasted until 2008, when Heineken and Carlsberg jointly purchased Scottish & Newcastle, splitting up its assets. Hartwell and Lapin Kulta went to Heineken, before being sold again to Royal Unibrew in 2013 for €470 million.
