Lionshead Beer was introduced by Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1983. At the time, the brewery was owned by the Smulowitz family, led by William Smulowitz. In 1993, the company was sold to Quincy Partners, which took Lion Brewery public in 1996. Three years later, however, it was taken private again by Chuck Lawson, who purchased it for $18.5 million. He again sold the business in 2007 to Cliff Risell and Ron Hammond, who held it until 2019, when it was finally sold to private equity company Encore Consumer Capital.
