Maluti Beer is produced by Maluti Mountain Brewery, which was founded in 1980 as a joint venture between the Lesotho National Development Corporation, South African Breweries, and the Commonwealth Development Corporation. The brewery was originally known as the Lesotho Brewing Company, before it was renamed to the Maluti Mountain Brewery in 1982, after the Maluti Mountain range which covers the eastern two-thirds of the nation of Lesotho. The company’s main brewing facility is located in Maseru, the largest and capital city of Lesotho.
In 2002, South African Breweries was renamed to SABMiller when it purchased the American brewery Miller Brewing from tobacco conglomerate Philip Morris. In 2016, SABMiller was itself purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, and Maluti Mountain Brewery became a wholy owned subsidiary of the largest brewery in the world.
The Maluti Mountain Brewery is the only major beer manufacturer in Lesotho, the small enclave nation completely surrounded by South Africa. The company also produces other Anheuser-Busch InBev beers, and distributes all of its beer throughout the country through five distribution depots. It also previously was a franchised bottler of the Coca-Cola company, until that portion of its business was acquired by Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in 2021.
Although Anheuser-Busch InBev has management rights to the brewery – meaning they have the right to make business decisions about the company – they only own a 39 percent interest in the company. The biggest shareholder is the Lesotho government, through the Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC), with 51 percent, along with the Ministry of Finance, with 5.25 percent. The remaining 4.75 percent is owned by the Lesotho Unit Trust, a private investment firm. The company also claims to be one of the largest taxpayers in Lesotho.
