Brouwerij Mort Subite was founded in 1869 by Jan Fransiscus De Keersmaeker in Kobbegem, Belgium, and was originally known as Brasserie De Keersmaeker. In 1989, Brouwerijen Alken Maes purchased a 50% stake in De Keersmaeker, and purchased the other 50% in 2000, renaming the brewery Brouwerij Mort Subite. At that time, Alken Maes was a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle, which was purchased jointly by Heineken and Carlsberg in 2008. Each brewery took half of the brands, and Mort Subite ended up with Heineken.
