Regia Cerveza was first brewed in 1906 in Santa Ana, El Salvador by Rafael Meza Ayau y Compañía. The beer was the first product of the company, started by Rafael Meza Ayau. In 1935, the company merged with Cervecería Polar and became Industrias La Constancia. In 1939, when the company took over the production of Coca Cola for El Salvador, it was split into three divisions. Industrias Cristal de Centroamérica (which managed the non-alcoholic portfolio), Embotelladora Salvadoreña (which produced bottles) and Cervecería La Constancia (the company’s brewing division).

In 2001, Industrias La Constancia was purchased by South African Breweries, which became SABMiller the following year with the purchase of Miller Brewery in the United States. That acquisition made SABMiller one of the largest breweries in the world.

In 2016, Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired SABMiller. The Salvadorean authority requested that the company divest itself of the Regia and Suprema brands. Those two brands formed roughly 11% of the Salvadorean beer market, and with ABInBev’s ownership of other major domestic brands like Ace Pilsener, as well as major imported beers like Budweiser, the government was worried they would have a virtual monopoly. In 2018, a deal was finally reached to sell the brands to Cervecería Salvadoreña, a new company that was created for the purchase of the properties.

As part of the deal, the Superintendency of Competition allowed Anheuser-Busch InBev to produce the beer on behalf of Cervecería Salvadoreña until 2024. The company had planned on starting to build their own brewing facility starting in 2019, but those plans were delayed by the pandemic. With production still not fully at 100% capacity, the Superintendencey of Competition later extended the deal to allow AB InBev to produce the beer for a further 18 months.
