Tafel beer was first brewed by the Hansa Brewery in Swakopmund, Namibia, which opened in 1928. In 1967, it was taken over by rival South West Breweries, Limited. When Namibia became independent in 1990, the brewery changed its name to Namibia Breweries Limited. The company began working closely with Heineken South Africa, and eventually purchased a 25% stake in the Heineken subsidiary. In 2023, Heineken International swallowed NBL, along with fellow Namibian brewery Distell, for $4.6 billion.
