Vailima beer was created in the year 1978 in the city of Apia, which is the capital of Samoa. In 1999, Carlton Breweries of Fiji (a subsidiary of Carlton & United Breweries) purchased 68.3% of Vailima, with most of the rest of the shares being owned by Samoan and Nauruan governments. In 2011, Carlton & United was purchased by SABMiller, who offloaded the brand to Coca-Cola Amatil. In 2021, Coca-Cola Amatil was purchased by Coca-Cola European Partners, who subsequently changed their name to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. The following year, the company faced criticism for moving production outside of Samoa to their facility in Fiji. Subsequently, the company agreed to license the brand to local husband and wife Charlie Va’ai and Beatrice Ott for production on the island.
