Wernesgrüner Brewery was founded in Wernesgrün, Saxony (now Germany) in 1436 by the Schorer brothers. In 1762, the brewery was acquired by the Günnel family, who held it until 1946 when the brewery was taken over by the East German government. The brewery was again privatized in 1994, and in 2002 was purchased by Bitburger Braugruppe. In 2021, Bitburger sold Wernesgrüner to Carlsberg Group. In the English-speaking world, the beer is sold exclusively by Aldi Supermarkets.
