What does CERVECERA DE PUERTO RICO Own?
Cervecera de Puerto Rico was founded in 1937 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico by three brothers: Alfonso, Sabino and Ramón Valdés Cobián. In 1938, they released the beer Cerveza India. They later renamed the brewery after that brand, becoming Cervecería India, and when their main competitor Corona (not to be confused with Grupo Modelo’s Corona) went bankrupt in 1985, they became the market leader in Puerto Rico. They expanded to a light option called Medalla, as well as an artisanal brewery called Del Oeste. In 2009, the company reverted to its previous name to encapsulate the wider offerings.
