Angkor beer was first brewed in 1965 by Société des Khmere Distilleries in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The company was created by the Cambodian government, and named the beer after the iconic temples in the region. When civil war broke out in 1975, brewing stopped, but production began again when Malaysian company Cambrew refurbished the facilities in 1992. In 2005, a 50% stake in Cambrew was purchased by Carlsberg Group. Carlsberg increased its stake to 75% in 2018, and purchased the remainder in 2019, renaming the company Carlsberg Cambodia.
