Beaufort Lager was first created in Douala, Cameroon in 1952 by Brasseries du Cameroun. That company was founded four years earlier, with Jacques Robert Lalo serving as its General Manager, and was a project of the French company Les Brasseries et Glacières d’Indochine, later known as Les Brasseries et Glacières Internationales. The company began by making sodas in 1950, and added Beaufort Lager two years after that. By 1963, it had obtained the license to manufacture and bottle Coca-Cola in the region, which greatly allowed them to expand.
In 1990, a majority stake of Brasseries du Cameroun was purchased by Groupe Castel. Castel, also a French company, is one of the largest wine producers in the world, and is one of the biggest beer producers in Africa, with the purchase of several breweries throughout the continent. The company now owns more than 84% of the company, which was renamed to Société anonyme des Boissons du Cameroun in 2022. Beaufort Lager is now produced in several breweries throughout Africa, and marketed in Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mali, Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Gabon, Togo, and Madagascar, as well as ten other African countries. In Cameroon, the company has an outsized share of the market, with over 71% of the total market controlled by its brands. As SABC’s flagship brand, the vast majority of this is Beaufort Lager.
Although the company is based in Douala, Cameroon’s largest city and economic center, it also has facilities in the cities of Yaoundé (the capital of Cameroon), Douala, Bafoussam, Ombé, and Garoua. It has focused more on its own products in recent years, and in 2022 it stopped the production, bottling, and marketing of Coca-Cola products throughout its service area.
