St. Louis Lager is the name of two beer brands, both of which are now owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. The first was created by the companies predecessor, E. Anheuser & Co., when the company was started in 1860 by Eberhard Anheuser and William D’Oench. In 1869, D’Oench sold his stake in the company to Adolphus Busch, and St. Louis Lager was replaced as the company’s flagship in 1876 by Budweiser. Three years later, the company was renamed Anheuser-Busch.

The second beer was entirely unrelated, and was created in 1989 in Gabarone, Botswana by Kgalagadi Breweries Limited. The brewery started in the 1960s brewing traditional sorghum beer, but expanded in the 1970s when Sechaba Breweries Holdings was created to hold the investments of the brewery. South African Brewers purchased a 16.8% stake in Sechaba, which owned 60% of Kgalagadi, and in 1977 they purchased the other 40%, bringing their blended ownership stake to 50.8% and giving them managing control.

Reportedly, the name “St. Louis Lager” came as a request from South African Brewers, who wanted to claim the trademark in an attempt to appear similar to Anheuser-Busch.

In 2002, South African Breweries bought Miller from Philip Morris for $5.6 billion, and was renamed SABMiller. In 2016, SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the successor company to Anheuser-Busch after that company was purchased by Belgian brewing giant InBev in 2008.

While the Botswanan beer is still very popular throughout the country, the American version went dormant until 2021, when it was brought back in small quantities by AB InBev. The beer is mainly distributed in the area around its main brewery in St. Louis, Missouri, where it is marketed as a local beer.
