Bintang Beer was first brewed in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1929 by Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerijen, a company set up by Heineken. At the time, the nation was still controlled by the Netherlands, and was known as the Dutch East Indies. The company was set up that year in the nearby city of Medan, and soon Heineken was building its first brewery in a tropical region in Surabaya.

The beer was modeled as a localized version of Heineken, with similar branding and packaging. Both are bottled in a green glass bottle, and both have a star as their logo. Bintang means “Star” in the Indonesian language. When Indonesia achieved independence in 1949, the brewery was renamed ‘Heineken’s Indonesian Brewery Company’ to reflect the country’s new identity.

However, in 1957, a wave of nationalization spread under the rule of President Sukarno’s government, and soon the company was taken over by the state. This period was marked by significant changes as the brewery adapted to local governance and the growing Indonesian market. Heineken regained control in 1967 after Sukarno died and was replaced by Suharto. This led to several political and economic shifts in the country, which allowed for renewed investment and expansion despite the dictatorial rule of the leader.

The brand’s success also paved the way for innovation and diversification. Bintang began offering variants like Bintang Radler, a refreshing blend of beer and lemon juice, and Bintang Zero, a non-alcoholic version catering to those seeking the flavor without the alcohol. Internationally, Bintang Beer has gained recognition as a representative of Indonesian culture. It’s often sought after in regions with a significant Indonesian diaspora or in international markets that embrace global beer varieties. Today, it is Indonesia’s most popular beer.
