Grimbergen is a popular beer brand that was created in 1958 by Brouwerij Maes in Waarloos, Belgium. The brewers there approached the monks of Norbertine Abbey in Grimbergen, Belgium about licensing the name, as they had brewed beer called Grimbergen from 1158 when the abbey was founded until the 18th century. The recipe was developed by the monks who were known for their brewing expertise. In 1988, Maes merged with Cristal-Alken Brewery to become Alken-Maes. In 2000, Alken-Maes was purchased by UK brewing group Scottish & Newcastle. In 2008, Heineken and Carlsberg came together to purchase the assets of Scottish & Newcastle and divide them up. While most of the Alken-Maes brands became part of Heineken, Carlsberg received the rights to Grimbergen. However, Heineken earned the rights to sell Grimbergen within Belgium.
