Hofbräuhaus was estasblished in Munich, Bavaria (now a part of Germany) in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria, Wilhelm V. Situated just outside of the royal residence, the brewery was created to serve the royal court. When Wilhelm’s heir, Maximilian I took power, he requested that the brewery shift its focus from brown beer to wheat beer. Since the Bavarian Beer Purity Law otherwise outlawed the use of wheat in beers, this led to Hofbräuhaus having a de facto monopoly on the product.
The brewery remained a property of the royal court until 1852, when Maximilian II officially handed it over to the State of Bavaria, who remains in control of the business to this day.
