Steenbrugge beer was originally brewed by Benedictine monks in St Peter’s Abbey in Steenbrugge, Germany beginning in 1914. In 1943, German forces stopped the production of beer, but it started again in 1958 by Brouwerij du Lac, which in 1960 was purchased by Brouwerij Leopold, who brewed Steenbrugge until 1965. Costenoble Brewery picked up the brand in 1972, brewing it until 1980 when they ran out of business. The Benedictine monks then formed a partnership with Brouwerij ‘t Hamerks, which lasted until 1982. The following year, the site was purchased by De Gouden Boom, which brewed the beer until 2003, when it was purchased by Palm Breweries. Bavaria Brewery purchased half of Palm in 2016 for €39 million, and in 2021 purchased the other half. In 2018, Bavaria changed their name to Swinkels Family Brewers.
