New Belgium Files to Create IPA Collab With Malört – But There’s a Twist

May 8, 2025 – New Belgium Brewery looks to be teaming up with legendary Chicago-based liquor Jeppson’s Malört for their latest IPA, according to filings approved this week by the TTB.
“Voodoo Ranger x Malört Roulette IPA” is a new 7.5% IPA flavored like the wormwood-based liquor that’s a cult favorite for bar bets throughout the Windy City.
Or, at least, it might be.
That’s because the beer appears to be a 50/50 shot of being either the new collab, or New Belgium’s flagship Voodoo Ranger.
“May contain Voodoo Ranger or Malört-style IPA. You’ve been warned,” reads the label. With no indications on the outside of the can, drinkers won’t know which one they’ve cracked open until it’s too late.
Jeppson’s Malört has long embraced their reputation as the bracingly bitter digestive that Chicago locals foist upon unsuspecting visitors. Most recently, the company made waves with an ad campaign featuring drinkers recoiling in disgust, with the tagline, “Do Not Enjoy. Responsibly.”
New Belgium, now owned by Japanese brewing giant Kirin, has used the Voodoo Ranger campaign for other non-traditional collaborations recently, including a notable pizza-flavored IPA made last year with Tombstone Pizza. Since launching in 2017, Voodoo Ranger has become the number one selling IPA in the United States.
No word yet from New Belgium on when the beer will officially launch, but no doubt it will be made available for risk takers – throughout Chicago at least – soon.
